Personnel spotlight

The British Army Brass Band operates much like a regular Army band.  It has two Directors of Music, a Bandmaster and a Band Sergeant Major; all with established pedigrees in the brass band world.

Director of Music, Captain Dave Barringer BMus (Hons) CAMUS

Capt Barringer was born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.  He played with some of the UK's top bands and was Junior Slow Melody Champion of Great Britain for two years in succession.

He has spent 2 years as resident conductor of the Flowers Brass Band as well as conducting several brass bands in the South of England including SWT Woodfalls Band and Yeovil Town Band.  He won the London heat of the 1998 Young Conductor of the Year Competition, went on to be runner up at the National final and represented Great Britain at the inaugural European Conductor of the Year competition in the year 2000.

During his time in the Army he has served as a musician with the Coldstream Guards, as Bandmaster with the Adjutant Generals Corps and as Director of Music of the Band of the Royal Corps of Signals.  He has also spent time working at the Headquarters Corps of Army Music, Kneller Hall.

Director of Music, Captain Justin Matthews BMus (Hons) MMus MCGI CAMUS

Capt Matthews born in Stockport, Manchester, studied music under Roy Newsome and David King at Salford University. He has performed with several top brass bands such as Fairey's, Foden's and Leyland.  He has also conducted many brass bands in the South of England including SWT Woodfalls, Redbridge, Regent Brass and Staines.

At the suggestion of Peter Parkes, he joined the Army and has subsequently served as a musician with The Life Guards and as Bandmaster with the Royal Lancers, the Light Division (subsequently the Rifles) and the Welsh Guards.  He has also served as an instructor at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall.

In January 2009 he was commissioned and, after training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, was appointed Director of Music of the Band of the Army Air Corps.

During his career he has performed in Canada, Australia, Bermuda, Bosnia and extensively throughout Europe and America. He has also performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Frank Renton's All Star Brass.  He has just completed a Masters Degree in Composing for Television and Film.

Bandmaster, Warrant Officer Class One Chris King BMus (Hons)

He currently conducts the Friary Guildford Band and is Bandmaster of the Band of the Grenadier Guards .

His Army career began at the Army Junior School of Music, Pirbright.  He has served as a musician with the Royal Artillery Band, as Bandmaster with the Minden Band of the Queen's Division and has worked as Training Development Team Warrant Officer; a staff appointment at the Headquarters Corps of Army Music, Kneller Hall.

Band Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Class One Lee Clayson

Warrant Officer Class One Lee Clayson grew up with brass bands in a Salvation Army family and has been an enthusiast ever since.

He is ideally based to deal with most of the management and administration for BABB and also plays on the front row.
