Director of Music

Captain Paul Wilman's musical career started in 1984 when he joined the Band of The Life Guards as a pianist and flautist.  Prior to this, he enjoyed an early musical outlet as a Cathedral Choirboy as well as being organist in three different churches. During his time with The Life Guards, he partook in all major ceremonial events including Investitures at Buckingham Palace, Trooping the Colour, The Royal Tournament, VE and VJ Celebrations and Mounted Escorts to visiting Heads of State. 

He is a qualified Medic and provided cover during the 1990 London Ambulance Strike and Operation GRANBY in 1991.

During his time with The Life Guards, he partook in all major ceremonial events including Investitures at Buckingham Palace, Trooping the Colour, The Royal Tournament, VE and VJ Celebrations and Mounted Escorts to visiting Heads of State. 

In 1998, he was selected to begin the Bandmasters' course at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall.  He graduated with a BA (Hons) degree and was subsequently posted as Bandmaster to the Royal Gibraltar Regiment.  It was here that, in conjunction with a Director of a local company, he initiated a youth band project which encouraged young children to take up the learning of wind band instruments.

In 2002, he was appointed Bandmaster of the Band of the Royal Corps of Signals.  In Early 2003, he deployed to the Gulf as part of Op TELIC, and served with 1 Close Support Medical Regiment as a Watchkeeper.

In June 2005, he was commissioned and appointed as Director of Music of the Lowland Band of the Scottish Division.  In May the following year, and in conjunction with the merging of all the Scottish Regiments, he was appointed as Director of Music to the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.  After 3 years of Scottish Ceremonial and worldwide performances, he was posted, in 2009, to Headquarters, Corps of Army Music as a Staff Officer responsible for Operations and Training.

In June 2011, he finally turned full circle and was given the privilege of returning to where he started, The Band of The Life Guards as their Director of Music.
