British Army Brass Band News

Cpl Richard Evans wins Brian Evans Memorial Trophy

Cpl Richard Evans, has recently confirmed what those within the band already knew, by winning the prestigious Brian Evans Memorial Trophy for his outstanding performance whilst playing soprano with Desford Colliery Band at the British Open in September.

His performance in Titan's Progress, from the number 1 draw at the Birmingham Symphony Hall set the standard for the day which wasn't to be beaten, despite the presence of the 7 of the world's top ten brass bands.

Richard, currently based with the Band of the Army Air Corps in Middle Wallop, was delighted to receive the reward, and it is seen by those who know him as huge recognition for the effort which he puts into his music.

Richard has been the soprano cornet with the BABB since it's formation in 2007 and can be heard playing Damelza on their debut CD, and has been featured as a soloist on every BABB concert since.  He is also the co-lead trumpet player in the Army Big Band, and has also served on cornet with the Band of the Coldstream Guards and Band of the Irish Guards based in London.

Desford Colliery finished a very creditable seventh place on the day, only being beaten by the very best bands in the business.  Other BABB members playing with them included Musn Mike Ashton (trombone), Musn Steph Barrett (Cornet), Sgt Paul Thomas (BBb Bass) and WO1 Lee Clayson (Cornet).
