WELCOME

2 MERCIAN Badge and Motto

2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters)

Firstly, welcome to your Battalion. You have chosen to join your County Battalion and you have chosen well. The Second Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) is second to none and represents everything that is great about the British Infantry. You have also joined a family that looks after its own and is noted for its welcoming spirit and its tough soldiers.  Until 31 August 2007 our details can be found here

We are currently based in Hounslow in Middlesex, although since we arrived here last August we have found ourselves in Central America conducting jungle training, in Iraq doing reconnaissance and in Cyprus training in arid conditions. Soldiers from the Battalion, as I write, are on operations in Afghanistan

The Army offers you a career that is varied, exciting and rewarding and your officers and NCOs will invest more time and effort in you than any other employer. You will continue to learn new skills, visit new countries and have experiences that are way beyond the dreams of your friends back home. Most of them will look forward to Friday as the end of the working week; you will be looking forward to Monday, as you will be doing something that they can only read about. You are joining an exclusive club that is based on trust, commitment and teamwork, with friends who will walk side by side with you for as long as you want.

Your Battalion has a vested interest in you whether you are in basic training, newly joined, an “old sweat” or leaving at the end of your career. We invest in you from end-to-end. We want you to succeed and will stop at nothing to make sure you do.

WHY CHOOSE

THE WORCESTERS AND FORESTERS

As a Worcester and Forester you will be trained to operate all over the world as part of a formidable team in order to defeat Britain’s enemies. You will be at the forefront of the action and your tasks will vary enormously. You will be trained to fight in conventional operations and be given additional skills for specific deployments, whether working in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Balkans or anywhere else in the world. Whatever you are called upon to do, you will be with Your Mates, Your Regiment, Your Worcesters and Foresters.

The Infantry soldier is the foundation of the British Army’s success and is involved in a variety of tasks. In combat they assume a major role in attacking and defeating the enemy, by day or night, whatever the weather, in any part of the world. They defend areas that are vital to winning a battle, protecting key points, routes and communication centres. They counter enemy Special Forces, Parachute and Heliborne Assault troops, and destroy enemy tanks. They observe and patrol against the enemy in order to gain information and defeat him.

An Infantry soldier may work with a variety of modes of transport; from armoured vehicles to helicopters, airplanes or assault boats; and in all types of terrain: deserts, towns, cities, forests, mountains and the Arctic. In essence, the Infantry soldier is trained to protect his comrades and himself, to use his initiative, skill and cunning to defeat the enemy, whenever and wherever he is called to do so.

The Worcesters and Foresters is a Light Role battalion, which can serve anywhere in the World. Through the formation of the MERCIANS, Worcesters and Foresters will offer opportunities to serve in Armoured and Mechanised Infantry battalions also. If that is not enough Worcesters and Foresters are currently serving in the three elite units of British Special Forces: Special Air Service (SAS), Special Boat Service (SBS) and Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR).

Introduction to The Regimental Recruiting Team and Army Youth Team

The 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters & Foresters) – Sep 07 have a Regimental Recruiting Team based in Chilwell, Nottingham and an Army Youth Team based in Lichfield, Staffs that conduct Regimental Recruiting and Army Recruiting. We achieve this by conducting Team Building and Personal Development Activities for Cadets, Schools and potential recruits as well as other recruiting tasks. The team consists of serving infantry soldiers, including specialists from Mortars, Javelin Anti-Tank, Signals, Physical Training, Sniper and Army Driver Platoons.

The team’s job is to encourage and assist suitable applicants to join the Army. The team promotes teamwork and the Army’s core values, selfless commitment, discipline, loyalty, integrity and respect for others, as well as key citizenship skills. You may not be aware that the infantry as well as other careers within the Army, offer a wide selection of inter-transferable qualifications.

Look At Life Course:

The Army Youth Team conducts a 5 – day residential course at Whittington Barracks, Lichfield, Staffs. The course caters for 14-17 year olds, males and females who have a genuine interest in finding out what life in today’s Army is really like. Students are accommodated in recruit accommodation and take part in command tasks, map reading, physical training, rock climbing, sport and fieldcraft, culminating in an outdoor overnight exercise. Each student will leave with a certificate and a better understanding of Army life.

Did you know:

The Worcesters & Foresters take a special interest in their recruits in training and provide a ‘Regimental Shepherd’ who provides guidance and moral support throughout the training process. He is completely independent to any instructors and reports directly to the Regiment, not the training establishment.

Schools Contact:

Schools are encouraged to contact their Army Careers Advisor and ask for The Worcesters & Foresters Recruiting Team.
