Veterinary Technician - What does it Involve?

The role of Veterinary Technician (VT) is to assist in the treatment of Service animals and to provide first aid pending the arrival of the Veterinary Officer. They will be required to assist during surgical operations and radiography, and carry out laboratory tests. They are responsible for reporting to the Veterinary Officer any signs of ill health in animals and for providing the nursing support for hospitalised patients. The VT will also be required to instruct RAVC personnel and Junior Veterinary Technicians in veterinary subjects.

Conditions of Work
Once qualified you can be posted throughout the world as a VT. Currently VTs are serving in Cyprus, Germany, UK mainland, Northern Ireland Iraq and Afghanistan. As well as serving with RAVC units, VTs are also attached to the Household Cavalry Regiments and The Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery.
Career Structure
Once you have completed your specialist training you will be eligible for promotion to Lance Corporal. How quickly you advance to Corporal depends on a number of factors, not least your ability and motivation. As a Corporal you will find there are opportunities to improve your educational qualifications attending courses, improving your skills in man management and administration before rising through the ranks of Sergeant, Staff Sergeant and Warrant Officer 2 to Warrant Officer 1. Some Warrant Officers go on to achieve commissioning and become Officers.
Personal Qualities
You must be reliable, of good character and of stable personality. You should be mature, self motivated, display potential leadership qualities including eagerness, a capacity to learn and a genuine interest in, and desire to work with, animals. You should have 4 GCSEs grade A-C, including English Language.
