THE LIGHT INFANTRY
A REGIMENT - A FAMILY - AN ETHOS - A WAY OF LIFE

The Light Infantry is proud to be the most operationally experienced Regiment in the British Army - with a history and tradition that is second to none. Both Battalions have been, or are currently on, operations in Iraq. 1 LI is currently based in Paderborn in Germany as an Armoured Infantry Battalion. It was involved in the fighting to liberate Iraq and returned to the area of operations as part of Op TELIC 3. 2 LI is currently based in Edinburgh as a light role Infantry battalion.
Elements of our TA companies have also served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This level of commitment is no coincidence. As part of the famous Light Division, the Light Infantry has been at the forefront of military operations since its creation in 1968, when the former County Light Infantry Regiments were amalgamated to form the modern Regiment. As a result of the latest round of Defence Reviews, as of 22 July 2005, we have been joined by The Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry and The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry, who will merge to form our new 1st Battalion in 2006. The current 1 LI and 2 LI will then become 2 LI and 3 LI respectively.

All of them are pairs of brothers serving together in the 2 RTR Battlegroup
The Light Infantry is therefore to become one of the largest Infantry Regiments in the British Army - with 3 Regular Battalions (650 soldiers in each). With our 5 Territorial Army Companies (120 soldiers in each) spread across the counties of Cornwall, Somerset, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Yorkshire and Durham; as well as our extensive Regimental network of Regimental Associations and Cadet forces, we can offer you a opportunity to meet people from across the country as well as your home town.
