Joining The King’s Troop could be the best decision you ever make. It’s a big decision but will give you a varied and fulfilling career. If you think you’re interested, whether you can ride or not, look below to see how to join:
Step 1
Visit a recruiting office or The King’s Troop web page www.army.uk/kingstprha/ , look up ARMY in your telephone directory, or contact our Recruiting Sgt, Sgt Vernon on 0207 414 4641.
If you’re already in Phase 1 Training go and see your RA representative or recruiting Sgt.
Step 2
Take part in a 2 day course at your nearest Army Selection
and Development Centre (ASDC). This gives you a more
Detailed look at life in the Army. You will be able to meet
soldiers in recruit training and you will undergo a medical
and fitness assessment including a 1.5 mile run. You will
also take some aptitude tests and be interviewed by an
Officer.
Step 3
Come and join us for 3 days in St John’s Wood, London on
a potential recruits’ course. Work with soldiers and horses
and get an insight into how life could be. Just visit a
recruiting office and they will put you in contact with us.
You might be able to do this before Step 2, depending on
availability.
Step 4
On being selected you will attend Phase 1 Training to get
you skills of a basic soldier. All Royal Artillery recruits
attend the Common Military Syllabus (Recruits) or CMS(R)
at the Army Training Regiment (ATR) in Pirbright, Surrey.
This is a 14 week course which covers weapon handling,
physical training, field craft, map reading, drill, military
education, adventurous training and a whole lot more to
turn you into a soldier. Junior entry recruits attend the
Army Development Course at ATR Winchester, which is a
20 week course focussing on core military skills and wider
key skills.The Army Foundation College at Harrogate
runs a 42 week course for junior soldiers which
encompasses both military training and civilian NVQs.
The Army pays you from the day you start training and
your pay increases upon completion of Basic Training.
Step 5
On completion of Phase 1 Training you will go to Larkhill,
Wiltshire the home of the Royal Artillery for Phase 2
Training. The modular course lasts about 12 weeks,
during that time you will take your theory and practical
driving tests, be trained in digital communications,
enhance your Basic Skills, hone your close combat skills,
develop your leadership ability, participate in adventurous
training and sport as well as having the opportunity to
develop your NVQ portfolio. During Phase 2 you will wear
the Royal Horse Artillery Cypher and stable belt.
Step 6
On completion of Phase 2 Training you will be a qualified
soldier and will join us and become one of the soldiers of
The King’s Troop RHA.
At The King’s Troop RHA you will learn a variety of skills including
- Military riding
- Show jumping
- Cross country riding and team chasing
- Leadership
- 1st Aid
- Navigation
- Car, motorbike and HGV licences
- Opportunity to become a military riding instructor in addition to qualifying as a BHS AI
- NVQs and apprenticeships in horse care, logistics and horse transport
- Opportunity to train to become a fully qualified saddler, farrier or tailor gaining both civilian and military qualifications
- Certificates in Equine Transport
- Military shooting
- Fitness and sport
- Adventurous training abroad including parachuting, scuba diving and trekking
- Basic and Key skills
