The King’s Troop Farrier

A Farrier is a person who shoes horses. In the King’s Troop there are seven farriers that are responsible for shoeing all the horses. Upon joining the King’s Troop you have the opportunity to gain various trades.

Before you are eligible to leave the lines to embark upon your chosen trade you must complete a minimum of two years in the “lines”.
Anyone who joins the King’s Troop is eligible to become a farrier regardless of age or sex. In the UK there are approximately 2,800 qualified farriers and about 20 of these are female.

If you are successful in gaining a place in the Forge the first course you have to complete is the B3 farrier course.

Farrier

The B3 carries with it a 3 year time bar meaning you can’t leave the Army before it is complete. This is held at the Army School of Farriery in Melton Mowbray and lasts for 3 ½ months. You then come back to the Troop where you are trained by the master farrier and the other instructors in the forge area.

The B2 is the civilian equivalent of the Diploma of the Worshipful Company of farriers and allows you to shoe horses unsupervised. The B2 also carries a time bar, this time it is 4 years. During this time you work towards your B1 which is the equivalent of the Associateship of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. You are eligible to take this 2 years after your B2.

Farriery is very hard work but is also very rewarding. It is a practical job requiring co-ordination and physical strength. Also a very good knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the horses’ limbs is required to be a farrier.dy for the B2 examination
