The Armoury at Ashton

The Armoury, Ashton-under-Lyne.

The Armoury, Old Street, Ashton-under-Lyne was built in 1886 as the home of the predecessor Volunteer Battalion of the 9th Battalion the Manchester Regiment, and has been the home of the Association Branch since 1920, when it began life with some 180 members, arranging social events, dinners and outings.

Today the current 180, (but different), members also have the opportunity to keep in touch at similar events arranged by a hard working and imaginative committee.

The Branch meets on the 1st and 3rd Sundays each month at 12 noon, and on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. 

ashton1 Our photograph is of eight members,- surprisingly not one with a glass in his hand, standing by the Volunteer Inn door which had been rescued from the building opposite,-just visible through the window. Also in the photograph is Tahir of the Gold Gem Co. who kindly gave and had the door fitted.
The two major events in the Branch calendar are the Passchendaele Dinner in October, and the annual visit to Valenciennes in November to join our French colleagues for their Remembrance parade; a French party then attends the parade in Ashton-under-Lyne.     

Many other events are arranged and/or attended during the year and we will try to give adequate notice on this website, but to be sure of keeping up to date and having an interesting and enjoyable 2006, write or ring the Secretary and become a Member.
