A limited 1st edition of 1,000 copies of the history of the now combined King’s Liverpool and Manchester Regiments from 1685 to the present day (2000). Recording the exploits of the old 8th or King's Regiment of Foot, later the King’s Liverpool Regiment, together with the 63rd and 96th Regiments which combined to form the Manchester Regiment in 1881. Battalions of the Regiment fought with the Duke of Marlborough in the famous battles of Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet against the French, defended Canada and fought against the rebels in the American War of Independence.
Campaigns in the West Indies, Egypt and the Peninsula followed in the late 18th and early 19th century. Desperate actions in the Crimea against the Russians and the mutineers in the Indian Mutiny mid-century, and in defence of imperial interests on the Northwest Frontier, Australia, New Zealand and Burma preceded the exploits of seven battalions in South Africa, notably at the Siege of Ladysmith. The Volunteer Service companies of the new volunteer battalions from Liverpool and Manchester were strongly represented in that conflict.
50 pages cover actions of no less than eighty-seven battalions in World War 1 from Mons to 1st and 2nd Ypres, King's and Manchesters Brigades on the Somme, Arras and the battles of 1918 as well as the Manchester Brigade at Gallipoli. In World War 2 battalions fought with the British Expeditionary Force, with the Chindits, in Burma, Italy and North West Europe from D-Day through to the final days of the war. Post war, battalions saw service in Korea, the Malayan Emergency and Northern Ireland. The present day King’s Regiment was formed from the two regiments in 1958 and has a strongly individual character, which draws on its history as well as the enduring characteristic spirit of men from the two great British cities of Liverpool and Manchester.
Roll of Honour 1951- 1990. Twenty three VC citations. Family trees and service guide to individual battalions in World War 1 and World War 2.
