As an engineer you give the Army the means to move, fight and survive - people's lives depend on your expertise. You can be involved in anything from providing the latest maps and making sure the local drinking water is purified, to ensuring military tanks are in full working order.

Engineering in the Army features a wide range of trades which are in demand all over the world. For example, as a Combat Engineer in the Royal Engineers you can be building bridges,or navigating and diving in rivers. In the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) you can be repairing and modifying equipment from rocket launchers to armoured vehicles. Most units have a REME detachment so you could find yourself serving attached to an Infantry battalion, a logistics regiment or even on a ship. 


Royal Engineers

The Corps of Royal Engineers supports the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force wherever they are in the world. Trained as soldiers and engineers, its men and women rise to some of the toughest challenges military life can bring, whether in conflict or in peacetime. Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME)

The British Army is on the cutting edge of military technology. Around the world we employ highly specialised mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment to gather information, fight and to move troops and kit. From rifles to rocket launchers, motorcycles to main battle tanks, the Army's effectiveness depends on its equipment being fit and ready to go at a moment's notice. Royal Logistic Corps

The Royal Logistic Corps is the power behind the Army. In peacetime and on operations it provides essential logistic support and services to ensure the British Army can function effectively and efficiently, wherever it is in the world.  RLC soldiers operate a large variety of vehicles and equipment to deliver essential supplies and services.  We also operate ships, railways, and mobile fuel depots.  We are especially proud of our bomb squads who destroy terrorist explosive devices at home and abroad.

Army Air Corps (AAC)

The Army Air Corps is a powerful and effective force which provides information and firepower to ensure the success of any mission.  To enable it to do this AAC soldiers are all trained as groundcrew and are responsible for fuelling and rearming of the aircraft.  Along with craftsmen from the REME, our groundcrew ensure aircraft are kept airworthy and are ready for the next flight.

Engineering units located in the South West

24 Commando Regiment Royal Engineers at Royal Marine Base, Chivenor near Barnstaple, North Devon.  This is the permanent base for Royal Engineers who support 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines.  These Commando sappers all have to pass the demanding Commando course at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone, near Exeter to wear the coveted Green Beret of Commando Forces.


6 Battalion REME at Tidworth near Andover on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border.  Although the Corps cannot promise to post individuals to specific locations, we do have 6 Battalion based in the West Country.


3 Commando Brigade
Soldiers from the RLC and REME can be found working alongside the Royal Marines in 3 Commando Brigade's Commando Logistics Regiment also at Royal Marine Base, Chivenor near Barnstaple, North Devon.  These Commando logisticians all have to pass the demanding Commando course at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone, near Exeter to wear the coveted Green Beret of Commando Forces.
