The Irish Guards is not made up only of the fighting part of the Regiment – the 1st Battalion (and the 2nd and 3rd Battalions during the World Wars) – but of the Regimental Band, the Association, which unites Micks who have left the Battalion and of the Regiment’s past and future. Regimental Headquarters looks after all these other aspects of the organisation.
By being the point of contact for ACFs and CCFs run by Irish Guardsmen and by recruiting new officers Regimental Headquarters helps to ensure that the Battalion is well manned in the future. It also makes a huge contribution to events such as St. Patrick’s Day by organising that visitors, be they relations of Irish Guardsmen or ex-Micks, come along. The various branches of the Irish Guards Association all stem from Regimental Headquarters and are connected to the 1st Battalion through it. All the old members of the Regiment are contactable through Regimental Headquarters and the archives contain the records of all the Micks who have died.
As well as being the organisation which is the figurehead of the Regiment, therefore, Headquarters has an important role to play in the upkeep of traditions and in the future of the rest of the Regiment.
