The Irish Guards is a Light Role Infantry Battalion. It consists of three Rifle Companies, a Support Weapons Company and Headquarter Company. To see what kind of weaponry we have click on the equipment link above and look at the first two sections. We have also just received the UGL, an Underslung Grenade Launcher, which fits to the SA80 and fires a 40mm grenade up to 350m.
Our main tasks are dismounted close combat, in times of war like in Iraq in 2003; peace support operations, such as Kosovo and Northern Ireland; and we perform public duties when based in London.
The Cap Star and Regimental Motto
The cap star is an eight pointed star of the most illustrious order of St Patrick.
In the centre is a shamrock, superimposed on each leaf of the shamrock is a state imperial Crown of Ireland. Behind the shamrock is the cross of St Patrick. Below are the roman numerals "MDCCLXXXIII" which stand for 1783, the year the order was formed. Above are the Latin words "QUIS SEPARABIT" which is the regimental motto and means:
WHO SHALL SEPARATE US

The diagram on the right shows the structure of the regiment.
