As early as 1954 the Intelligence Corps Comrades Association (ICCA) (changed in 1964 to Intelligence Corps Association (ICA) adopted the motto:
'TRUE COMRADESHIP IS THE SUPREME GIFT OF THE MILITARY LIFE'.
These stirring words were written by that brillian soldier and writer Field Marshal Earl WAVELL. In graciously agreeing to a request by Major General DAVIDSON, Colonel Commandant, Intelligence Corps at the time, to adopt this motto Lady WAVELL wrote:
'INDEED WE ARE PROUD THAT YOU SHOULD WISH TO'.
At the Corps Committee meeting held on 05 October 1962 it was proposed that the Corps should have a new motto. The Chairman Major General SHORTT, Colonel Commandant, Intelligence Corps listed the following possible mottos:
a. 'ACTION FROM KNOWLEDGE' - The Canadian Intelligence Corps Motto
b. 'VIGILANCE' - Based on an idea by the Secretary of ICCA Major WW LEARY BEM
c. 'KNOWLEDGE TO THE ARM' - Based on an idea by the Colonel Commandant.
The Committee agreed that the motto should be c. The Colonel Commandant confirmed that he would put this forward to the College of Heralds for approval.
In addition, the Colonel Commandant arranged for the motto to be translated into Latin by BG WHITFIELD, a House Master at Eton. The translation was:
'MANUI DAT COGNITIO VIRES'- Knowledge Gives Strength to the Arm.
It was finally approved by Her Majesty the Queen in 1964 and adopted by the Corps.
The Committee agreed, however, that the motto would not be incorporated in the Corps Badge, but would only be used on Letter Heads, Invitation Cards, Christmas Cards, Cover of the Corps Journal, Corps Shields and Flags.
When the motto was adopted the ICA motto was discontinued.
