Training
Phase 1 Training
This training - also known as basic training - takes place at Regimental level at our various training centres and areas in the UK. It spans 9 weekends for Infantry and 6 weekends for HQ Company support roles.
Everyone in the British Army does the same basic training. It includes learning how the rifle works and how to fire it, drill, basic field craft, physical fitness, Regimental history, map reading and first aid.
Time for sport and adventurous training is also included in the training programme. On successful completion of Phase 1 Training recuits become a Private, Fusilier, or a Ranger and are presented with their Regimental headdress- a beret, Tam O'Shanter or a Caubeen.
Phase 2 Training
Specialised Infantry training lasts for 2 weeks and takes place at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick, North Yorkshire. It's during this training that the new Privates, Fusiliers or Rangers take their places in their Rifle Companies.
They learn to operate and fire the light anti-tank weapon (LAW) and are trained on other Infantry weapons including hand grenades.
Those in support roles complete their training at other locations.
The tactics of the Infantry (attacking in a group, digging a trench, living in it and fighting from it for 2-3 days and patrolling by day and by night) are also taught.
These tactics are then combined with the firing of weapons in a final exercise. This is a challenging, demanding and exciting finale to combat Infantry training.
On successful completion of Phase 2 Training, soldiers take their well-earned places within their Companies and are then eligible to apply for mobilisation or FTRS (full time reserve service - a full time posting alongside the Regular Army, anywhere in the world).
Officer Training
Infantry Officers within The London Regiment are required to lead and motivate soldiers to complete tasks in the field to the best of their ability, often when they least wish to complete them.
Officers are trained to develop their leadership capabilities and to create new skills and abilities in other areas.
To be considered as a London Regiment potential Officer, recruits need to enjoy a challenge, be intellectually sound and enjoy the variety of demands placed on them. The training is conducted through the London District Regional Training Centre.
