Airborne Charities
There are two active and mutually supportive fundraising charities: The Parachute Regiment Charity (No 1131977) amalgamates the former Central Fund and Airborne Forces Charities. This is a new charity carrying on our best traditions in the relief of hardship, need and distress amongst members of the Regiment and Airborne Forces and their dependents, and doing much besides to promote morale and military efficiency. http://www.paracharity.org
The Afghanistan Trust (No 1121647) founded in 2007 primarily supports the relief of all Parachute Regiment soldiers injured in Afghanistan, and the families of those wounded or killed, with welfare services, support and financial assistance, and sustains the memory of loss of life and the sacrifices made there by soldiers of the Regiment. http://www.afghanistantrust.org The key distinction between them is that The Parachute Regiment Charity has responsibility for wider regimental charitable activities. This includes welfare, but The Parachute Regiment Charity remit goes beyond cases specifically associated with operations in Afghanistan.
As a general guideline we see the Afghanistan Trust (AT) and the Parachute Regiment Charity (PRC) covering serving personnel and the Airborne Forces Security Fund (ABSF) covering retired personnel. There is no change to the ABSF which continues to assist all Airborne soldiers, ex-Airborne soldiers and their dependents in need. The Airborne Forces Security Fund Registered Charity No 206552
The Airborne Forces Security Fund
Was set up in 1942 and provides help for all those members, ex-members, and their dependants who are in financial difficulties.
The Fund originally relied on donations and bequests. In 1947 as the wartime units were disbanded their funds were donated to the Security Fund. These were invested and still provide income today.
In the 1980s the day's pay scheme was started and all officers and other ranks serving toady pay one day's pay per annum towards welfare and Regimental activities.Part of this sum comes to the Security Fund. Donations and bequests however are vitally important and gratefully received.
The Fund is managed by a Board of Trustees (all ex-airborne) who meet twice a year to decide policy. The day-to-day running of the Fund is the responsibility of the Controller who, with his staff, has an office at RHQ, The Parachute Regiment.
