Territorial Officer

4th Battalion - Platoon Pre-Deployment Training

To those who may not be able to commit themselves to a full time career in the Army or who do not want to hamper other career options it is able to offer very similar leadership opportunities to those of the Regular Army.

Potential Officers who pass the selection procedures can expect to earn their Territorial Commission within twelve to eighteen months of joining.  This will culminate in a three week training course at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst alongside regular officer counterparts.

Because the 4th Battalion has centres all over Yorkshire, TA officers can begin their service at a TA Centre close to home while, training for the same operations as the Regular soldiers and officers of the Yorkshire Regiment.  They can also specialise in any of the Support Weapons of an Infantry Battalion; Mortars, Machine Guns, Anti Tanks and Assault Pioneers.

There are always excellent opportunities to complete six month operational tours, usually with one of the three Regular Army Yorkshire Regiment Battalions which will be serving wherever the British Army is deployed.

Training takes place on Tuesday nights and every other weekend.  The annual training cycle culminates each year in a two week summer exercise, either in the UK or overseas, which will include both military and adventurous training.  Recently the 4th Battalion has gone to Albania, Gibraltar, Cyprus and Georgia, USA for its Overseas Exercises.

Most employers appreciate the value of Territorial Army service and are happy to support you should you wish to apply for a TA commission.  The training you will receive in command and leadership will undoubtedly assist you in your civilian employment, not least through developing valuable management leadership skills relevant to all business and industry.  Being a TA Officer does require your dedication and energy but, in return, you will make new friends, extend your horizons and gain 'hands-on' experience of leadership and complex decision making in difficult and demanding situations while, of course, being well paid.
