Regimental Selection

Yorkshire Regiment - Potential Officer Familiarisation Visits

While you are at Sandhurst you will be required to make one of the most important, if not the most important, decision on your career in the Army, that is - which Regiment or Corps you are to commission into.

Your aim is to find the right Regiment to join; the one where you will have the best career prospects, have the most to contribute and be able to enjoy a satisfying and rewarding career working together with officers and soldiers whom you admire, respect and who you will come to value as friends and colleagues.  Throughout the decision making process, you should not forget that the Regiment must also want you if it is to offer you a place.  So it is important that you aspire to and reflect the commitment and qualities it will be looking for in its officers.

The foundations for making the right choice of Regiment will, for many, have started before arriving at Sandhurst when your Army Careers Advisor will have directed you to us to be your sponsor through the AOSB process and into RMAS.  This is because he felt that you were suited to a commission in the Yorkshire Regiment.  Others may have passed AOSB, or even be at Sandhurst, when they decide to explore opportunities within the Yorkshire Regiment. We welcome and encourage your interest at whatever time it is sparked.

For those whom we have either sponsored or who have expressed an interest in the Yorkshire Regiment before they start their commissioning course we will always seek to arrange at least one familiarisation visit, and often more, before arriving at Sandhurst.  These visits are normally over two or three days.  They will be to one of our three battalions where, depending on what that battalion is doing, you will stay in the officer's mess and be given an opportunity to see the life of a young officer at first hand, meet soldiers and NCOs and get a flavour of what it means to be an officer in The Yorkshire Regiment.  The battalion, meanwhile, will also be looking at you to see how you interact with the soldiers and officers and how, one day, you may be able to contribute as an officer yourself in the Regiment.

These visits, though, are just the starting point in both your's and the Regiment's decision-making process since it is at Sandhurst that the final choices are made.  Nevertheless, it is extremely helpful for you to be able to arrive there reasonably confident in your likely commissioning preferences and, in particular, whether or not the Yorkshire Regiment is for you.
