Regimental Museum of The Highlanders
(The Queen's Own Highlanders Collection)

The Regimental Museum Collection of the Queen's Own Highlanders is the private collection of a regiment with over 200 years association with Fort George. The Seaforth Highlanders were formed in 1881 by the amalgamation of the 72nd Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders, raised in 1778, and the 78th Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs), raised in 1793. The Territorial district of the Seaforth Highlanders included the counties of Caithness, Sutherland, Ross & Cromarty, Moray, and the Orkney Islands, with a Depot at Fort George. The 79th Cameron Highlanders were raised in 1793 and were designated The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders by Queen Victoria. The Territorial district included Invemess-shire and Naim, with a depot at Cameron Barracks, Inverness. After the amalgamation of the Seaforth Highlanders and The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders in 1961 to form the Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons) the two regimental museum collections were combined and set up at Fort George in the former Lieutenant Governor's house.

The Museum comprises a unique collection of medals, uniforms and accoutrements, weapons, paintings and prints, colours and pipe banners, mess plate, ceramics, and other artefacts covering the history of the regiment back to 1778. The Museum also has a comprehensive library and archive collection to which researchers are welcome, and this includes original sources and published material on Fort George. The Museum publishes and sells its own regimental history books, and an extensive range of prints, postcards and other items.
