Although the primary source of information on the internet for the Green Howards
is this website, the Friends
of the Green Howards website also carries information about the present
day Regiment. The information on the Friends website somewhat expands on that
found here, so if there is anything else you need to know it is worth looking
on the Friends website.
This page will tell you something about the ROLE of the
regiment, the ADVENTURE and SPORTING
activities of the regiment, and the TERRITORIAL ARMY and CADETS
who are associated with the regiment. There are also STORIES
OF LIFE IN THE REGIMENT, which show Green Howards taking on sporting challenges
or being involved in less familiar situations.
The Role of the
Regiment
The Green Howards completed a two-year tour of duty in Northern Ireland and
moved from Ballykelly, near Londonderry, to Chepstow
in February 2004. Here, the Regiment will specialize as a light role infantry
battalion and await deployments around the world. In early 2005 the Regiment
was involved in the jungles of Belize in Central America, and have already started
training our own jungle experts.
Some photographs and stories of members of the 1st Battalion serving in Afghanistan
and training in Belize can be found by selecting this link;-

Green Howards in the TA
There are two Companies of Territorial Army (TA) Green Howards.
They are based in Middlesbrough and Scarborough, and there are detachments
in Guisborough and Northallerton.
They train as infantry soldiers at weekends and on drill nights. They are
part of the TA’s Tyne Tees Regiment and they have an annual camp with the
Regiment’s other Companies.
The Territorial soldiers have taken part in many overseas exercises. Some
have reinforced the regular 1st Battalion on operations in Northern Ireland
and Bosnia, whilst others have helped with the training in Canada. |
