Colonel in Chief presents Mercers' Fitness Trophy to Fus Halpin

Several Fusiliers who served in the Regiment with 3RRF in the first Gulf War of 1991 were with 1RRF and 7th Armoured Brigade when they successfully took Basrah during Operation TELIC 1. The Armoured Infantry Fusiliers are unique in the Infantry in having been in the forefront of both Gulf Wars. Indeed the Fusiliers are very pleased to know that their efforts, and sacrifices, were recognised by the theatre honour of
"Iraq 2003" and Battle Honour "Al Basrah" being awarded to the Regiment by Her Majesty The Queen.

Since then 1RRF has served again in Iraq on Op Telic 7, a tour that ended in April 2006.  Since then after the Battalion was reunited with its families in Celle Germany there was a rare spell of “normality.” They trained in Poland, moved from Celle to Lumsden Barracks in Fallingbostel, adjusted to new equipment, played sport, became the British Army (Germany) Boxing Champions in the process, completed 8 weeks of Armoured Infantry training in Canada, which ended in November 2007, and took the opportunity for some well earned leave.

In May this year, the Battalion deployed again to Iraq on Op TELIC 12 and this time it is the fourth time for the Commanding Officer and a few others. They are there for 6 months confident that their training has ensured that they are fully prepared for any eventuality.

WO2 Darkoh presenting arms

In December 2005 2nd Fusiliers left Palace Barracks, Belfast for Cyprus but before that, in October 2005, Major Matt Thorp with C Company returned from a 6 month tour of duty in Basrah. They were the first Northern Ireland based troops to be deployed out of the Province. Very sadly Fusiliers Stephen Manning and Donal Meade were killed when terrorists detonated a roadside bomb. In a similar attack, LCpl Craig Short and Fusilier Aveuta Tuila were injured and have each had to have below the knee amputations. (Fusilier Tuila recovered quickly and is now back with the battalion.  LCpl Short remains in the Regiment and is a recruiter in Newcastle.)

The Coy arriving

A Company arriving in Afghanistan being met by Lt Col Merriman MBE (July 2006)

Barely settled in Dhekelia in the Northern Sovereign Base with their families, the Fusiliers assumed the role of Theatre Reserve Battalion. During the next 58 weeks there were only 11 weeks that Fusiliers were not deployed on operations in either Afghanistan or Iraq, This is an extraordinary fact; furthermore by luck and good leadership the Battalion avoided any fatalities while in contact.

Initially, two Companies deployed to Basra in March 2006 for 4 weeks. Then at the end of July, an A Company Group of 150 Fusiliers, reinforced by members of B Company under command of Major John Swift deployed to Afghanistan. They returned to their families in Cyprus in November 2006 with the distinction of having defended an outpost without relief for 107 days. Their exploits in the town of Naw Zad fully justified the centre page coverage in The Sun Newspaper as this was the longest such feat of arms by British forces since Korea

Meanwhile, the rest of the Battalion went on a fantastic training exercise to Jordan at the end of which rather than returning to Cyprus, they too found themselves deployed back to Basrah. Each Company had its own area of operations and returned in December for their very well deserved Christmas Leave.

Formed up on parade in the New Year 2007, the CO greeted them with the news that they were required once again and within days, at the end of January, B Company, under Major Andrew Higgs, was once again back in Basrah. Shortly afterwards Major Jim Taylor took his company, complete with his slice of support weapons and snipers back to Helmand where after fighting off Taliban, frequently within hand grenade range, and calling in massive air support, this company began the first of the now largely successful clearance operations that have pushed the Taliban out of areas that they had previously held.

The Battalion was eventually complete and back in Cyprus in mid-May when they were able to hand over this most demanding Theatre Reserve Battalion role to the other Cyprus based infantry battalion of the Royal Welsh Regiment. In June they were delighted to receive a visit by their Colonel-in-Chief, a visit frequently postponed thanks to these unscheduled and continuous operational deployments. Details of his visit appear on the 2nd Battalion page accessed on the titles on the left of the page..

On 30/31 October, inspite of being on Exercise Saffron Sands in Jordan, the Battalion Rear Party in Dhekelia hosted 180 members of the Regimental Association to a splendid Fusilier Gathering. Seldom had so much work been done by so few, yet enjoyed by so many!

 Afghanistan

Meeting the local population in Afghanistan

This March, 2008, 2RRF left Cyprus after 30 months (well their familes were there for 30 months but very few soldiers) and are now back in England, in London for the next 2 years. The anticipate an operational tour in 2009 but meanwhile are doing Public Duties providing the Guard at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, St James's Palace and outside Her Majesty's Tower of London.

For their latest news see the 2nd Battalion page on the left hand side. The video library from their operations is especially impressive.

Gilesgate, Durham

After TA Future Infantry Structure decisions, 5RRF returned to the Order of Battle within the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers on 1 April 2006. The Bn HQ is at Gilesgate in Durham, X and Y Companies are in Newcastle and Ashington respectively and the HQ Company is split between Durham and Bishop Aukland. There is also a Rifles Company, D (Rifles) Company within 5RRF based in Bishop Auckland.

The Honorary Colonel of the Fifth Battalion is His Grace Colonel the Duke of Northumberland.

5RRF had the responsibility of organising and conducting EXERCISE EXECUTIVE STRETCH which took place at Catterick. The exercise exposes executives to the reserve forces and uses a military model to develope their management and leadership skills. The commander of the local Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA) described the exercise as "probably the best that they had been involved in over the past 16 years."

5RRF have recently completed their Annual Training in Kirkudbright, Scotland. This training included field firing, Mortars and SF cadres, Officer and SNCO development Cadres and culminated in a force on force exercise in the Galloway forest. The Band of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers joined 1RRF in Celle and performed at Battalion and community events. After training at Lydd the shooting team achieved their best ever result at Bisley.

5RRF is currently providing support to Regular and TA units on operations and is increasing its links to the Regular Battalions by providing FTRS opportunities.

On 3 November, the Battalion's first Commanding Officer, Lt Col Paul Hodgson TD handed over command to Lt Col Steve Hopper TD

Many TA Fusiliers have now served in both Afghanistan and in Iraq. A full composite company will deploy to Afghanistan in 2009.
