Between the Wars 1918 - 1939
Following the end to hostilities, in November 1918 the Regiment was reduced from 21 Battalions to its pre-war strength of 2 Regular and 4 TF Battalions.
The 1st Battalion left India for the 3rd Afghan War in 1919 before returning to England in 1921 via Egypt, Palestine and Turkey. Apart from brief spells in Gibraltar and Turkey in 1922-23, the 1st Battalion remained in Britain until 1935. Then they moved to Malta until 1937 before being posted back to England.
The 2nd Battalion returned from France for a brief period before sailing for Egypt in 1922, moved to Singapore and then to India in 1928 in a reversion to the days of colonial policing. During 1934-35 2 DWR were on the NW Frontier of India and took part in the Loe Agra and subsequent Mohmand operations.
Back home, the Territorial Army was reformed in 1919 and the Regiment consequently had four Territorial Battalions: 4th (Halifax), 5th (Huddersfield), 6th (Skipton) and the 7th (Milnsbridge), these all formed the 147th (2nd West Riding) Brigade. |
