Army Doctrine Publications

The Army Doctrine Publications are a series of booklets providing the higher level philosopy and principles of the British Army.  They are being combined into a single volume, ADP Land Operations, that is due to be published in the new year.

British Military Doctrine 590 KB

acopdflogo2.gif (2090 bytes)This booklet provides an overview of British Military Doctrine, examining its components and levels.  It also discusses the development and applicability of Military doctrine.

ADP Vol 1 -  Operations 538 KB
acopdflogo2.gif (2090 bytes)The purpose of OPERATIONS is to interpret The British Military Doctrine (BMD) in the light of current United Kingdom security policy in order to guide commanders in the planning and execution of future Campaigns and Operations. In short, it sets out the Army's approach to fighting in future conflicts.
ADP Vol 2 - Command 2.6 MB

acopdflogo2.gif (2090 bytes)If we are to execute our operational doctrine with its premium on achieving high tempo and destroying the cohesion of an adversary in order to succeed on the battlefield, then we shall need an approach to command that matches our approach to warfighting.  This approach will have to use the same language and concepts, whilst recognising both the need for timely decision making and firm leadership , as well as the other enduring tenets that form the foundations of command and its execution.  Volume 2 - COMMAND provides just that.

ADP Vol 3 - Logistics 317 KB
acopdflogo2.gif (2090 bytes)LOGISTICS provides a conceptual understanding of the sustainment of operations.  It expands upon the enduring understanding of the approach to war identified in the British Military Doctrine (BMD).  It develops further the concepts outlined in Operations and explains the role of the commander in sustaining his campaign, introduced in Command.  LOGISTICS is not concerned with the detailed practice or procedures of logistics; these are contained in the practitioner's Army Field Manual, Combat Service Support.  Nor is it prescriptive; rather it describes the logistic factors a commander should consider to achieve success.
ADP Vol 3 - Medical Supplement 870 KB
acopdflogo2.gif (2090 bytes)Army Doctrine Publication LOGISTICS concentrated on the materiel aspects of logistics.  This Medical Supplement has been written to deal with the issues of health and medical support.  It concentrates on the actions required to sustain the human element of fighting power.  As such, it complements Part 1; together they provide a more balanced study of logistics as a whole.
ADP Vol 4 - Training 214 KB
acopdflogo2.gif (2090 bytes)The purpose of TRAINING is to interpret and expand upon the training elements of The British Military Doctrine (BMD) in order to guide commanders and staff in the planning and conduct of training.  It sets out the British Army's approach to training.
ADP Vol 5 - Soldiering 204 KB
acopdflogo2.gif (2090 bytes)The purpose and measure of the British Army is military effectiveness: success in war and on other operations.  Ultimately this means that every soldier is a weapon bearer, so all must be prepared personally to make the decision to engage an enemy or to place themselves in harm's way.  All British soldiers share the legal right and duty to fight and if necessary, kill, according to their orders, and an unlimited liability to give their lives doing so.  This is the unique nature of soldiering.
