RESEARCH ENQUIRIES
Those wishing to commission research enquiries should provide as much information as possible to assist those conducting the research. Tell us what you already know and try and be specific about regimental and battalion titles and numbers, the names of persons and places, and dates. The more you can tell us the better. The less information you give us, potentially the more difficult and longer it will take to provide an answer – and the more costly.
COMMISSIONING AN ENQUIRY
Please telephone 01264 773144 x 4248 for an application form or print of a copy of the form: click here
Fees
Research is carried out by the Curator. Fees will be levied for the time taken to carry out the research. The Curator has other responsibilities other than research and enquiries can take some time. The fee is paid to the RAChD Museum Trust, a registered charity, to fund the preservation and maintenance of the museum and archive.
Current research fees are:
- Basic Charge: £18 per hour. Internal enquires will not be subject to a fee unless they exceed three hours.
- Schoolchildren will not be charged.
- Payment for the first hour must accompany the formal enquiry form.

Copyright
Under the Public Records Act the Photograph Archive is the repository for British official photographs within the Museum's remit. Official Crown Copyright photographs are administered by the museum under licence from Her Majesty's Stationery Office. These official photographs are complemented by the work of commercial and amateur photographers. The museum is able to licence most of the photographs in its care for usage. Where permission to use a photograph is required by a third party, it remains the responsibility of the user to obtain this.
Payment
Although licences are provided soon after they are requested, invoices are normally not sent until the date of publication/transmission unless specified otherwise. Payment can be made by cheque or International Money Order. Cheques should be made out to the "RAChD Museum Fund". Payment must be made in sterling. Cheques drawn on foreign banks are not accepted. The Museum of Army Chaplaincy correspondence reference and/or invoice number MUST be clearly shown
Acknowledgement
In your publication the Museum of Army Chaplaincy must be credited next to each image and the negative number included in the credit line where possible. The museum also requests that a copy of the publication be sent free of charge to the Museum after publication.
Fees for usage
These rates are for guidance only. Further details of print runs or uses not advertised are available on application from the Museum.
We do not have sufficient staff for large research tasks. Additionally, whilst public access to the archive research room is permitted, the times that the research room can be made available is dependant on the availability of staff supervision. Thus anyone engaged in lengthy research must be prepared to make arrangements to fit in with staff availability. Visits to the archive are normally arranged between Monday and Friday and must be by prior arrangement with at least 2 weeks notice. All users are asked to provide proof of identity such as a driving licence or utility bill.
On Receipt of an Enquiry
We only consider an enquiry to be initiated once we have received the filled in enquiry form. If you have written a letter or sent an e-mail you will be sent the form or informed where to find it on the internet (see initiating an enquiry).
Enquiries will be answered as soon as possible after their receipt. Depending on the volume of enquiries this can take some weeks. Receipt of enquiries will be acknowledged.
ACCESS TO ARCHIVAL MATERIAL
Members of the public with individual enquiries are advised to use our enquiry service. They may, however, visit the Archive Research room to do research themselves.
The charge for a visit will be £15 per hour regardless of whether the research is successful. Access to the research room is normally between Monday to Friday and is only by prior arrangement with at least 2 weeks notice.
The research room is small and only 2 persons per enquiry will be permitted.
Payment of Fees
As the Museum does not currently offer an e-commerce facility to enable credit/debit card payment, research enquiries will only be initiated on receipt of the enquiry form accompanied by a cheque for payment of the first hour.
Enquiries which, from the outset it is clear cannot be answered will normally result in the immediate return of the research fee. In instances where the research has been initiated but the answer is not forthcoming, the research fee will usually stand.
If, once underway, an enquiry seems likely to require research exceeding an hour but not exceeding 2 hours, it will be completed without reference to the enquirer, with the additional fee requested at the time of response. Enquiries that are likely to lead to greater charges will not be continued without the agreement of the enquirer.
