I'm not British - can I become an Army Chaplain?

If you wish to become a Chaplain in the British Army, you should be an Ordained Priest / Minister of one of the sending Churches.

Be of British Nationality 

Hold a British Passport

OR

Be an Ordained Priest / Minister of one of the sending Churches.

Hold the Nationality of a Commonwealth Country or the Republic of Ireland

AND

Pass the selection procedure

For Example:

If you are say from New Zealand holding that country's passport and are a Presbyterian Minister, you may become a British Army Chaplain provided that the Church of Scotland (the sending Presbyterian Church) will sponsor you and you pass the selection procedure.

Should you be invited for an interview you will be expected to fund your own traveling expenses if travelling from outside the UK.

Do British Army Chaplains carry arms?

No British Army Chaplain by the direct order of the Chaplain - General, or under the terms of the Geneva Convention is permitted to carry or use arms.

Who do British Army Chaplains work for?

British Army Chaplains are employed by the Ministry of Defence. They operate in the Army only with the authority of their Sending Church. Should that authority be withdrawn at any time from a Chaplain, then they will no longer be able to function as a Chaplain in the Army and will have to leave the service.

Who pays the salary and pensions of British Army Chaplains?

The Ministry of Defence pays British Army Chaplains.

How long must a Chaplain sign on for?

Initially a new Chaplain is commissioned for a Short Service Commission of three years. This can be extended by mutual agreement to five and then it depends upon the age of the Chaplain as to what happens after that period of time.
