HEADQUARTERS BRIGADE OF GURKHAS

hqbgbldg

Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas (HQBG) is a small unit based at Airfield Camp near Netheravon, Wiltshire.  Currently operating as part of Directorate of Army Staff Duties (DASD) Main Building London, HQBG is responsible for providing advice on all matters relating to the recruiting and employment of Gurkhas in the British Army.  HQBG is not part of the operational chain of command and has no operational units directly under command.  Indeed the title 'The Brigade of Gurkhas' is purely the collective name for all Gurkha units in the British Army - units that are located far and wide across the UK, in Nepal and in Brunei.  Nevertheless, despite this wide dispersion, HQBG provides the important unifying element for the Brigade, its activities and its soldiers.

The mission of HQBG is to provide advice and direction on matters of policy affecting the service of Gurkhas as part of the British Army in order to ensure the Brigade's efficient and effective delivery of military capability.

The tasks of HQBG are as follows:

  • Develop, maintain and promote the Brigade's ethos and sense of corporate identity.
  • Develop the Brigade's Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS).
  • Inform MOD Policy and provide advice on all Gurkha matters to the Chain of Command, including British Gurkhas Nepal.
  • Inspect all Gurkha units.
  • Coordinate Gurkha Manning within the Army.
  • In conjunction with the 'Military Secretary' provide career guidance for Royal Gurkha Rifles officers.
  • Provide the Secretariat for the Colonel Commandant Brigade of Gurkhas.
  • Provide the Regimental Headquarters for The Royal Gurkha Rifles, including potentail officer selection and coordination of Association activities.
  • Command the Brigade Training Team and Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas.
