As an armoured infantry battalion, 1st Battalion The Black Watch packs a far more powerful punch than ever before. This is mainly due to the addition of Warrior, an armoured infantry fighting vehicle whose worth has been demonstrated in the Gulf War and on peace support operations in Former Yugoslavia and currently in Iraq.

The Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle - (WR AFV)

Picture of The Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle - (WR AFV)

The Warrior Section vehicle has a crew of three and can carry a section of up to seven soldiers. Warrior's primary purpose is to move dismounted infantry across the battlefield rapidly and under armoured protection, and to support dismounted infantry with its mobile protected firepower.

The section and vehicle are commanded and fought as a single element: neither is fully effective without the other.

Warrior's firepower comes from its 30mm Rarden Cannon and the 7.62mm Chain gun. Under direction from the vehicle and section commander these can be used in combination to fix or defeat a number of targets, including trench and sangar systems or lightly armoured combat vehicles to a range of 2000 metres. The Chain Gun can be used to destroy soft skinned targets and dismounted infantry. Warrior's Commander and Gunner use the Raven image intensifier sight that can be used to acquire and defeat targets by day or night. Warrior variants also include a Command Vehicle for planning operations and Repair and Recovery vehicles used by the Light Aide Detachment (LAD). The Anti-Tank Platoon also carries their Milan firing posts in Warrior. The vehicle can operate over terrain normally impassable to wheeled vehicles at speeds of up to 80 kph to a range of over 500 km. Warrior can protect its crew and passengers from most things a battle can throw at it, and is protected against chemical attack.

In summary, the Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle is a capable and highly flexible piece of Black Watch equipment.
