One of the earliest swords in the Museum collection is this basket hilted broadsword used by the Regiment during the attack on Fort Ticonderoga in 1758.

Musket

For the first hundred years of its existence the Regiment was armed with a flintlock musket.

This "Brown Bess" had to be loaded down the barrel, a slow process in the heat of battle. It was fitted with the bayonet to alleviate this problem.

Dagger

All sorts of weapons have been used by enemies The Black Watch has had to fight - from tomahawks of North America Indians to spears in West Africa and pipe bombs in Northern Ireland.

Many examples are on display in the Museum including this vicious looking dagger taken from a dervish in the Sudan in 1884/1885.

Pistol

While accurate only at short ranges, pistols provide a most useful weapon in an emergency or as an alternative to a rifle for commanders or those with specialist roles.

This small 7 mm Browning was with Major Ian Molteno when he was killed in action in Holland during February 1945.

Machine Gun

Picture of a Machine Gun

This robust, drum fed machine gun was captured in Korea during the Battle of The Hook during November 1953. A Black Watch and a Chinese soldier both dived for shelter into the same hole during an artillery barrage - fortunately it was The Black Watch soldier who came out as victor.
