It is only possible to show a very small sample of the exciting items which have come into The Black Watch Regimental Collection during the past year. Some of these have come directly as donations from individuals, others have been acquired by purchase.
42nd Regimental Button
42nd Regimental button from the American War of Independence. This button was found in New York and is one of the very earliest items of Regimental uniform now held in the Museum. It was most generously donated by Mr and Mrs Morrow from Philadelphia.
Minature Silver Lochaber Axe
This unusual and handsome piece was made by George Edward & Sons in Glasgow and presented to Major James Menzies in 1887 in appreciation of his part in the erection of The Black Watch Memorial in Aberfeldy. It was purchased with the help of a grant from the National Fund for Acquisitions.
Set of Pipes Canada
These pipes were played by Piper Smith of the Canadian 42nd Highlanders at Vimy Ridge in 1917 and subsequently came into the possession of Jack McBride who served as a CANLOAN officer in the 7th Battalion in Normandy in 1944.
They are thus a very tangible link between the Back Watch and The Black Watch of Canada. The Museum is most indebted to Mr McBride for this and a number of other artifacts.
18th Century Documents
In 1775 and 1786 respectively Major General Thomas Stirling of Ardoch was made a Burgess of Glasgow and of Edinburgh.
The very fine burgess tickets relating to these appointments were presented to the Museum by Mrs Colin Innes along with other material of the Stirling family, particularly of Thomas Graham Stirling killed at Tel-el-Kebir.
