Welsh Guards Band Reunion
Sunday 8th February 2004
The Phoenix Public House

The atmosphere proved both lively and convivial at the 2004 reunion. Many former members of the Welsh Guards Band had overcome the constraints of distance and hectic schedules in order to see their former colleagues once again.

The sheer numbers in attendance and positive atmosphere seemed to suggest that this year’s change of venue, from the customary Sergeants’ Mess at Wellington Barracks, had proved an acceptable alternative. Before the buffet, the band relished the opportunity to catch up with legendary and respected past members, many of whom played a huge part in the musical life of the nation whilst serving and also in the music industry as a whole upon entering ‘Civvy Street.’ Most of the major orchestras in Britain have featured ex Welsh Guards Band members at some time as did dance bands such as ‘The Ted Heath Orchestra’ and the ‘Geraldo Band’.

After the buffet, the serious reminiscing began in earnest. Tables were commandeered and contented groups huddled to conduct the traditional ‘post-gig analysis’!

Thanks are due to the social committee for the organisation of this event. Appreciation is extended to the catering and bar staff at The Phoenix public house for their efficient and friendly service. Present members as well as our visitors always welcome the photographic presentations provided by Sgt Chris Eley and Musn Gary Llewellyn from the Archives Department.

In common with those currently serving in the band, the Director of Music recognised the efforts and contributions of all the former members in attendance this year and also those who were sorely missed by their absence.

The next band reunion date has yet to be confirmed
