A Career In Army Music
Q. If I joined the Army as a Musician, what kind of training would I receive?
A career in Army Music begins with 12 weeks phase one training at ATR Winchester in Hampshire. Here you are taught everything from map reading and weapon handling to the discipline of the parade ground.
On completion of Phase one training, you then move to the centre of world military music, The Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall situated in Twickenham. Here you will undertake your phase two military training which will include the Musician Class 3 examination. The course at Kneller Hall can be anything up to 48 weeks in length and equips the recruit with all of the musical skills required for a successful career in an army band.
When you have graduated from Kneller Hall, you join your band where you will immediately begin working professionally.
If, however, after a few years within the band you decide that you would like more from Army music, you can be recommended to undergo the three year Graduate Bandmaster Course at Kneller Hall. This is validated by Kingston University for a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music. You are taught conducting, advanced compositional techniques, aural perception and advanced harmony. This opens up the possibility of eventually becoming a Director of Music.
