October Party - In & Out
Email recieved.......
Dear Alan,
Thank you very much indeed for all your time on the telephone today and also for your very kind offer to forward on an invitation to the members of the Army Sailing Association. I have been working for the last two years on a programme entitled, Support for Combat Stress with a main aim of attracting a younger generation of supporters to this charity.
Combat Stress is the only registered charity in the UK who, through three treatment centres and a network of welfare officers nationwide, supports ex service personnel who are suffering from psychological disabilities as a result of their time on service. Things such as PTSD, depression, attempted suicide etc. On that point it is important to note that so far 329 servicemen who took part in The Falklands War have since committed suicide...
One of the things we are trying to change is the public’s understanding of the term “Veteran” and making them see that they are not only old boys but also individuals in their twenties and thirties, some of whom are in need of a little help from time to time.
We have been reaching out to the younger generation through ways that we believe reflect our lifestyles, facebook, sport, fashion, music etc and as a kick off we had a party at Aragon House in Parsons Green last year, which raise over £7,000, all for the charity.
We are having a second event on the 24th October at The Naval & Military Club in London , tickets are £25 and the evening will include a free drink on arrival, a speech at 9pm given by Colonel Richard Westley OBE MC, (CO of OPTAG) a silent auction, tombola, laser clay pigeon shoot, DJ’s etc. Josh Lewsey has also promised that he will do his best to come down and introduce our speaker and we are also honoured to say that we have been receiving much support from individuals such as General Sir Roger Wheeler GCB, CBE, ADC, Major General Michael Von Bertele, Surgeon Captain Rick Jolly OBE DAv Med and Lieutenant General Sir Freddie Viggers KCB CMG MBE to name a few.
Whilst it should all prove to be an awesome evening it is also very important to show the press and others that young people (mid 20’s to early 40’s) do support the military en masse and thus I am very keen to have a good turn-out. It is for this reason that I approached you in the hope that you would be most kind and forward this email on to all members of The Army Sailing Association and also your and their friends and families.

With many thanks in advance and hope to see you in October,
Nick Harrison
