Army Sevens History

The Army has a long history of playing Sevens at club level and annually holds a major tournament culminating in a finals day at Aldershot. The competition used to be the largest sevens competition in the world and still attracts over 80 teams.

The Army Sevens team was first formed in 2000 to help England to prepare for the IRB Sevens. Maj A Hickling (Royal Signals) the Army's Senior Coach, along with Col RDK Thompson (then the ARU Secretary) and Capt H Graham (Coldstream Guards/AGC) organised what was to become the Army Sevens.

The core of the first teams fielded by the Army were largely made up by Fijian rugby players, who had been recruited into the British Army. The enlistment of Fijians into the British Army began in the 1990's to help stem the shortfall of British recruits.

English International Seven's players have also represented the Army: Capt H Graham (Coldstream, Guards/AGC) and Cpl A Dawling (Royal Artillery)The current Captain of the Scottish International Sevens team is Capt M Lee (1 Scots). Sgt B Green (Royal Engineers) has represented the West Indian Sevens in an IRB Tournament.
