Unmanned Air Systems (UAS)

Since 2003, 32 Regiment RA has continuously had some of its personnel and equipment deployed on operations in either Iraq and / or Afghanistan, flying Unmanned Air Systems (UAS). These aircraft provide Imagery Intelligence (IMINT) and live video feeds (Full Motion Video - FMV) to a host of supported organisations, including various Headquarters, Infantry Battlegroups and UK Special Forces. As the demand for IMINT products and FMV has grown, so has the requirement for high calibre, intelligent and motivated soldiers to pilot our various Aircraft and to assist in interpreting the raw imagery it collects. Our soldiers are trained to fly one of three different Unmanned Air Systems; regularly deploying to North America, Africa and the Middle East for training exercises. We are at the cutting edge of both operations and military technology and a wholly unique, specialised Regiment within the British Army.

T-Hawk

Tarantula-Hawk or T-Hawk MUAS (mini unmanned air system) is a short endurance, lightweight, vertical take-off and landing UAS.  The MUAS is operated by a JNCO (Junior non-commissioned Officer) from 32 Regiment RA.  They work exclusively for the Royal Engineers Counter IED task force.  They routinely conduct reconnaissance missions and examine possible Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and ground sign along routes and tracks within Afghanistan in order to allow safe passage and to assist in the clearance of these devices.

Desert Hawk III

We are one of two Regiments in the Royal Artillery who provide the British Army's 'eye in the sky' in support of Land Forces on operations. Desert Hawk III is a small man-portable UAS surveillance system which provides essential day and night aerial video reconnaissance.
It has a flight time of approximately one hour and can fly almost anywhere within a 15 km radius of its ground control station usually based on the front line with the Infantry.
