ARMY AIR CORPS
GENERAL INFORMATION
 |
ROYAL PATRONAGE |
|
In 1992 His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales was appointed by Her Majesty the Queen to be Colonel in Chief of the Army Air Corps. As titular head of the Army Air Corps, apart from formal and ceremonial functions, his concern is the representation and pursuit of Corps interests as advised by the Colonel Commandant, Director and Regimental Colonel. |

THE GUIDON
Formerly borne exclusively by Armoured Regiments, the Guidon recognises the Army Air Corps as a Combat Arm in its own right. In recognition of its armed role on the modern battlefield, Her Majesty the Queen authorised the grant of a Guidon to the Army Air Corps and the emblazoning of Honours on it. The Guidon bears the Corps badge as the main device, with the AAC monogram in two of the four corners. The remaining corners show the badge of the Glider Pilot Regiment and that of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, to commemorate the founding constituents of the modern Corps. Emblazoned are the Theatre Honours awarded to the Army Air Corps: "Falkland Islands 1982" and "Gulf 1991". The Guidon was formally presented to the Corps on the 10 May 1994 at Middle Wallop by HRH The Prince of Wales.
APACHE AH MK1
The Army Air Corps received its first Apache AH Mk1 from Westlands in May 2000. The first unit to receive the Apache AH Mk1 will be 9 Regiment Army Air Corps based at Dishforth in North Yorkshire, where the recently converted to type (CTT) pilots will fly them in to the airfield in March 2004.

16 AIR ASSAULT BRIGADE
Sept 1999 saw the formation of a new Brigade in the British Army Order of Battle, 16 Air Assault Brigade. Intended as a rapidly deployable force, it encompasses 3,4 & 9 Regiment Army Air Corps as well as the Parachute Regiment Battalions. It has already seen action in Sierra Leone and Afghanistan, where it was supported by 657 Squadron Army Air Corps, and is currently on Operations in the Gulf region.
