Introduction
The King's Royal Hussars is an armoured regiment equipment with Challenger Main Battle Tanks. The regiment was formed on 4 December 1992 by the amalgamation of the Royal Hussars (PWO) and the 14th/20th King's Hussars.
The regiment recruits from Lancashire and Greater Manchester in the north, and Hampshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, the Isle of Wight and Channel Islands in the south. Despite this geographical diversity a very strong family spirit exemplifies the character of the regiment.
A Brief History of The King's Royal Hussars
The King's Royal Hussars is proud of the history and traditions of its predecessor regiments. The 10th, 11th, 14th and 20th Hussars date back as far as 1715. Our celebrated 'Cherrypicker' trousers were inherited from the 11th Hussars; famous for their part in the Charge of the Light Brigade and the distinguished Prussian Eagle cap badge was first granted to the 14th Light Dragoons in 1798.
Role
The King's Royal Hussars is stationed in Tidworth, Hampshire as part of 12 Mech Brigade. The armoured cavalry regiment is central to modern high intensity warfare as typified in the Gulf War, but flexibility is the watchword.
Armoured soldiers frequently operate as foot soldiers on the streets of Belfast, or anywhere the army is serving in the world; including Bosnia and Kosovo.
Adventure Training and Sport
Working hard means playing hard. Windsurfing, water-skiing, sailing, scuba diving, parachuting, mountaineering and white-water-rafting are just a few of the adventure training pursuits that have been undertaken in the past year.
Strong sports teams are very important to the regiment. We compete keenly in army championships for most sports and have been recent winners in football, rugby, hockey and cross-country. Individual sports are also supported, from squash and tennis to boxing and fencing.
Travel
Members of the regiment have recently been to the Gulf, Nepal, Hong Kong, Kenya, Germany, Switzerland, France, Sardinia, Cyprus, Australia and Canada. There are probably more opportunities for travel in the army at present than there have been for many years.
