Regimental Sport
When you're part of the British Army you have no choice but to work hard, so when given the chance you play hard too! The following sports are just a few the Regiment play during their busy schedule.
FOOTBALL This is played to a high standard within the Regiment both at Squadron and Regimental level. Each year the Regimental team is entered into the Cavalry Cup of which they have won 3 years running, a feat which has not been achieved since 1926. Everyone is given a chance to try out for the team but unfortunately only a small number of players are chosen. Those not wanting or not accepted into the team often play for the local community.
RUGBY UNION Over the last few years, members of the Regimental team have been spread throughout the country making it increasingly difficult to train together. But despite this they still managed to produce a high standard and played in the Cavalry Cup and Army Plate finals.
With so much talent in the regiment it will not be long before the benefits of serving together pay off and the Cavalry Cup is brought back to Swanton Morley.
The Regiment can also be proud of the fact that a number of players have been involved in playing for the Royal Armoured Corps team and their skills were rewarded with a tour of Dallas where they came up against various American teams.
VOLLEYBALL Since the Regiment began active competition they have won many honours. This was continued in 1997 with victory in the 3 (UK) Division Inter Unit Competition where the Regiment held onto the Winner's Trophy for a second year, and gained automatic entry for the 10th time into the Army major unit finals, where the team finished in 4th place. Later on in the year the 9/12 L supplied not only the team manager but 10 out of the 12 strong team that made up the Royal Armoured Corps team. At the end of the day the team became the proud owners of the first Inter Corps Championship Trophy. The future of volleyball within the Regiment is as healthy now as it has ever been. To keep up the high standards the team is constantly on the lookout for new players.

SKIING The Regiment has established itself as one of the heavyweight Army skiing teams over the last few years. They are fortunate to have visited places such as Switzerland for a shot the Royal Armoured Corps Championships in which they won for the second year running. Overall it was a polished performance and set the team up well for the Divisional and Army Championships. The Divisional and Army Championships were notable for the extremely cold weather and strong competition. Despite winning the slalom, 9/12L finished second overall. The Regimental team is continually training for future skiing competitions.
SAILING Regimental sailing is bigger, faster, more exotic and more professional than ever before. The 9/12L team have been involved in a number of Royal Armoured Corps Regatta Competitions. These consist of three days of racing in very variable conditions where they have won the Commodore's Propeller. There has also been a number of different adventure training exercises and the team have also been fortunate enough to go to Cowles in America for competitions.

The Regiment also takes part in other sports such as Cricket, Athletics, Cross Country, Indoor Rowing, Golf and Fishing.

SPORTS ON TOUR Occasionally whilst on tour in places such as Bosnia, Cyprus and Canada members of the Regiment get a chance to go away and do other things on an Adventure Training package, such as sub aqua diving, rock climbing, wind surfing, canoeing, hill climbing, orienteering and abseiling. |
