THE TERRITORIAL ARMY

7th/8th BATTALION ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS

There are great opportunities to get involved with the Argyll family on a part time basis.

7th/8th (Volunteer) Battalion, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, is a TA General Reserve Infantry Battalion which trains in a wide variety of activities in order to be ready for operational service at home and abroad. Full training with pay is provided.

  • Chefs
  • Pipers
  • Drummers
  • Medical Assistants
  • Armourers
  • Mess Stewards

Training normally takes place one evening per week, on selected weekends throughout the year and at Annual Camp for 15 days.

The Rewards

Pay

Illustration (12601 bytes)TA officers and soldiers are well paid. Rates of pay are comparable with those of the Regular Army, starting at £25 a day plus travel expenses.

Bounty

Illustration (21193 bytes)In addition to pay, an annual tax-free Bounty of £275, rising to £900 after five years, is paid to every volunteer Argyll who:

  • Is available for military service if needed in an emergency
  • Completes at least 27 days including Annual Camp
  • Passes/completes tests of basic fitness, shooting, first aid and other skills

Vacancies

A Gathering (17649 bytes)There are usually vacancies for new members to join 7th/8th (Volunteer) Battalion, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Anyone between 17 and 32 years of age (35 if ex-Service), who is medically healthy and of good character, is invited to apply to join. Candidates who are potential officers are welcome and for them there is a special selection process.
