OPPORTUNITIES FOR APTC SERVICE WITH THE TA

Under the Future Army Structure (FAS) and the subsequent rebalancing of the TA, the way the TA train and who trains them was given a complete overhaul.  As a result each Regional Brigade has its own training team working out of a Regional Training Centre RTC, within this team is an established and funded Warrant Officer Physical Training, the post is a Non-Regular Permanent Staff (NRPS) and holds the rank of WO2.  There are 10 of these centres and currently all of the posts are occupied, the tenure for the posts is 5 years and all occupants must reapply for their posts in order to serve beyond the 5 year point.

Additional to these 10 appointments the rebalancing designated a LSN in each unit establishment to be a SNCO Physical Training Instructor, whose sole job is to plan, coordinate, and conduct physical development throughout the unit, including their sub-units and outstations.  He is, as is the case with his Regular Army counterpart the COs advisor on all matters PD and should sit with the Unit Training Group, the Unit Health Committee and be part of the Risk Management mechanism within the unit.  These posts are currently cap-badged the same as the parent unit, but work is ongoing, in line with the TA Fitness Policy to offer those posts as APTC (V).  As yet the method of transfer, career path and numbers are still a matter of planning, it is envisaged that in the region of 80 – 100 APTC(V) will be required.

Two methods of transfer are being considered, leaving the Regular Army as an APTC SNCO and joining the TA (where a vacancy exists) or as a member of the TA working your way through the TA PTI Scheme to SNCO (Advanced PTI) and then applying to transfer to the APTC(V).  Work is ongoing but the intention is to have a scheme up and running by the end of 2009. Work is also going on to determine at what level Regular Army All Arms PTIs could enter the scheme.

On going is the recruitment of Officers to fill the posts of SO3 G7 PD (TA) in the Regional Divisional HQs, two are in posts and two remain gapped.  It is expected that their Man Training Days allocation will fall somewhere in the bracket of 19-50 MTD, in keeping with the rest of the TA and very much dependent on the operational tempo and the operational deployment plot.
