Families’ Run And Fun Day, Aldershot - 17 February 2008

A families’ event for all members of the Service community and civilians will be held in aid of SSAFA Forces Help in Aldershot on 17 February 2008.

The event will include runs of varying lengths, the appearance of the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas and family entertainment.

Details of how to enter the run and be part of this event will be posted on the SSAFA website (www.ssafa.org.uk) and other Services’ websites in the near future.

Please mark the date in your diary and dust off your trainers to start training now.

All money raised will put toward SSAFA Forces Help’s ‘Helping Heroes and their Families’ Appeal.  The appeal needs to raise £5 million in order to establish ‘home from homes’ near to Selly Oak Hospital and Headley Court Rehabilitation Centre, enabling families to visit seriously injured loved ones receiving treatment and rehabilitation.

General Sir Richard Dannatt the Chief of the General Staff, recently said there was a “growing gulf between the Army and the nation” – and this has captured the imagination of the media and the public.  Support from the Nation can have a tremendous boost to the morale of the Army and the families.  If you would like to support the troops but are not sure how, here are a few suggestions:

Contact your local Unit Welfare Office

Contact your local Unit Welfare Office to find out what help they may require, whether it is practical or financial.  The Unit Welfare Office supports soldiers and their families; in particular, when the soldiers are away on Operational Tour they often put on events for the families.

Donate to charities, such as:

Contact ‘Help for Heroes’, a new organisation formed to help those who have been wounded in Britain’s current conflicts – visit www.helpforheroes.org.uk to find out more.

Buy Christmas cards from forces charities, such as:

Army Benevolent Fund Christmas Card www.armybenfund.org SSAFA Christmas Card www.ssafa.org.uk

Send a Christmas Parcel

Send a Christmas parcel to a soldier on Operations; there are various websites involved in parcel send out (such as www.supportoursoldiers.co.uk) which would be grateful for your contribution.
