Marathon Couple Set to Raise Funds in Afghanistan and London

A Kew couple is preparing to pound the streets of New York on November 4 to raise vital funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.  Twenty six miles, five bridges, five boroughs and two million spectators make this the challenge of a lifetime.

Jane and John Wainwright, who both serve in the British Army, are running the marathon for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust because their two year old daughter Zara has Cystic Fibrosis (CF), the UK’s most common, life-threatening inherited disease.  Jane said “We had lots of fundraising events planned to reach our target of £4,000, however my husband has just been sent out to Afghanistan for six months. Now he will be raising sponsorship money out there and I will be doing my best to fundraise in the UK!”

John will be staging a static rowing competition to raise funds.  It will be set up throughout the various provinces of Afghanistan and army soldiers will compete simultaneously on rowing machines to beat each others time. You can sponsor the Wainwrights at www.justgiving.com/run4moo  Sponsorship money raised will help to fund gene therapy research, which hopes to stop CF from claiming so many young lives. It will also help provide support and advice to people living with CF.

If you are interested in running with Team CF in the New York City Marathon we have guaranteed places available. To find out more contact our events team on 0845 859 1100 or email events@cftrust.org.uk

BBC Television Tells The Stories Behind The Armed Forces Memorial

October 2007 will see the inauguration of the first national memorial to members of our Armed Forces killed on duty since the end of the Second World War. Currently under construction at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, this striking monument, designed by architect Liam O’Connor, will be engraved with the names of more than 15,000 Servicemen and women. Traditional ‘war memorials’ only remember those killed in conflict. The Armed Forces Memorial will reflect the wide range of circumstances in which troops have lost their lives while serving their country in the last 60 years - whether in action, during training at home and overseas, while supporting peacekeeping and aid missions, or as a result of terrorist action.  For more information visit www.forcesmemorial.org

Staffordshire Regiment - supporting the military ward at Selly Oak hospital

A small group of wives from the Regiment got together and decided that they would like to do something to raise money for charity.  Sadly it was at that time that 19 Bde took it's first casualties and as a result Selly Oak Hospital was chosen as the beneficiary of all the profits made from the venture.
It was quickly decided that the sale of tried and tested wristbands was the way forward. Next came what to write on it?  The wives wanted a motto or motif that would be "universal" and appeal to "all cap badges". So a competition was ran through the Families newsletter to get a feel for present thinking and to get some ideas. The chosen submission was 'Vis unita fortior-United strength is stronger'

Raising money for Afghan street children

Sophie Butler

Sophie Butler, whose husband is currently serving in Afghanistan, has helped raise £8,000 for Aschiana, the only charity that supports the street children in Kabul, by taking part in a 12,000ft tandem parachute jump!

Spearheading a campaign to raise £20,000 for Aschiana, which provides help to some of the estimated 50,000 street children in the Afghan capital, Sophie wrote to all the commanders of units in 16 Air Assault Brigade asking for support. In response, British troops in Helmand organised a sponsored team marathon around the perimeter of the camp, families back home arranged raffles and barbecues and children of the 1st Bn Royal Irish Regiment in Inverness weeded the pathways on the patch where the unit is based. So far the total raised for Aschiana is £15,000.

Sophie said; ‘The response from families has been amazing, especially from young children who really wanted to help. I think many families felt a real connection with what our husbands are trying to achieve in Afghanistan. They have shown tremendous spirit and determination to raise money’.

Aschiana, which means ‘nest’ in Dari, helps provide a refuge to the many thousands of street children living in poverty and danger in Kabul, by teaching essential skills such as
cleanliness and how to identify landmines, as well as giving them educational skills such as numeracy, literacy and art. They also receive one hot meal a day. Importantly, the charity also teaches the children vital vocational skills such as tailoring, embroidery, carpentry, mechanics and computer science.
