Vocational Education
We know that many of you have just left school and want to get out into the "real world". That is why, when you come to the Education Wing at the AFC, we will treat you as an adult learner. All the education you will do at the AFC is vocational - it will help you to do your job in the future and should help you to gain promotion more quickly than you otherwise would.
Wherever possible, the learning materials used will involve real military documents, exercises and working situations. The college is supported by well qualified civilian tutors who will guide you through the vocational education course.
Whatever level of educational achievement you come in at, we will give you additional skills and qualifications. Your Individual Learning Planning tutor will help you to plan your way through the courses and levels on offer. If you need additional learning support to help you, this is available in class and in small group and one-to-one sessions in the Learning Support Centre.
You will go to Military Studies, which teaches you about the structure of the Army and the various roles that it performs in the UK and in hot spots around the world.
You will also do an Apprenticeship for IT Users, which includes a Level 2 National Vocation Qualification (NVQ2) for IT Users. There is also the opportunity to do units of this at Level 3 (equivalent to AS/A level) and to gain the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) and Advanced ECDL.
You will gain key skills in Application of Number and Communication Skills - Maths and English as used in your Army career. Experience tells us that those of you with no previous qualifications will get to Level 1 or Level 2 (GCSE standard). Those of you with a GCSE or equivalent pass already will work towards Level 3.
Additionally, there are three "Wider Key Skills", Inproving Own Learning and Performance, Working with Others and Problem Solving, which you will gain whilst out on Leadership and initiative Training.
Some of you capbadged to the REME and Royal Engineers will do an additional Technical Course which includes another NVQ2, this time in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO2) which involves working in the workshops.
At the end of the 42 weeks you will have acquired a number of additional, nationally recognised vocational qualifications to add to your National Record of Achievement. Two other civilian awards open to you whilst at AFC(H) are the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the St John's First Aid Award. All the above qualifications will provide you with the skills to make you a more effective soldier.
