David Mills

Officer Cadet David Mills - 2 Section Commander, 2 Platoon

I joined the UOTC because I was interested in an Army career and it seemed a natural progression from my days as an Army Cadet.

I was also advised that it would help me develop as a person and earn some good qualifications to supplement my university degree.

In addition, I needed a part-time job and it seemed an exciting way to earn money whilst making loads of new friends and learning new skills. For me the UOTC is a part-time job, where I am constantly challenged and get to do things that I really like.

I particularly enjoy the opportunities to pursue sport and adventurous training.

I have also relished the opportunity to train with the Regular Army in the holidays as it has allowed me to see if the Army really is for me when I leave university.

The best trip was a month's attachment with an infantry battalion on a jungle training exercise. I have also gained valuable qualifications in adventurous and military training.

I have had the opportunity to represent Britain, and the Territorial Army, in football both in England and Germany.

I have also seen a bit of the world with the UOTC: from a military exercise in Belize, to visiting Dunkirk on the anniversary of D Day and to skiing in the French Alps.

Most importantly, I have made a number of lifetime friends.

Arriving at university can be an overwhelming experience as you probably have no friends, no job, no links with any clubs and no idea how to make the most of your spare time at university.

The UOTC provides the complete solution and offers you an experience which you will simply not get anywhere else.
