The Cadet organisation plays an important part in the life of the youth of this country, not least in 5th Division.  The Army Cadet Force (ACF) and the tri-service Combined Cadet Force (CCF) are both dynamic organisations, highly popular with young people, comprising over 440 ACF detachments in 17 Counties drawn from the wider young community, and 70 Schools CCF Army Sections.

There are some 17,000 ACF and Army Section CCF cadets within the Divisional area, about a third of them girls, and nearly 2,000 officers and instructors.  There are about 80 cadets per detachment and cadets can join between the ages of 12 and 18.

Working with the RFCAs, a dedicated team from the Divisional and Brigade HQs provide administrative support to the Cadet movement, liaising with specialist Cadet Training Teams in each Brigade, and co-ordinating the annual Cadet Camp programme and Easter Cadet Leadership Course, the latter at Nesscliff in Shropshire.

Occasional overseas camps and exchanges give cadets a welcome change of scenery and new experiences.

Certain aspects of the cadet training syllabus are recognised by The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, which many cadets work towards.

Many cadets move on to Army careers, and some the ‘Blue Light’ Services.  However, regardless of their chosen career they leave the Cadet Force with social skills which hold them in good stead and they can impart a positive message about the Service in later life.
