OUR TRAINING

29 Commando Regiment is a key element of 3 Commando Brigade which specialises in maritime force projection and is part of the United Kingdom Joint Rapid Deployment Force. In order to fulfil this task Commando soldiers undergo a great deal of specialised training. All Commando Gunners are qualified as Commando and are Arctic Warfare, Helicopter and Amphibious Assault trained. Many are Military Parachutists. This diverse portfolio of skills is often practiced and tested in exciting and varied training exercises which are undertaken all over the world.

3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines is primarily an amphibious force that deploys around the world by ship. We must therefore be able to deploy our assets from ship to shore using a variety of craft. These range from all types of commando craft ranging in size from the four man inflatable to the larger troop carrying vessels such as landing craft. Equally air insertion methods are used with Forward Observer Teams parachuting into action and the guns being lifted ashore by helicopter.

Jungle Training

Each year the Commando Gunners will normally take part in a major jungle exercise somewhere in the world. In 1996 and 1998 it was the Caribbean, 1997 Brunei and 1999 Kenya. This environment will sharpen both your infantry and gunnery skills. Consequently the Regiment requires many of its soldiers to be Jungle Warfare Instructors.

Artic Warfare Skills

The commandos specialize in mountain and cold weather warfare. Each year as a member of 29 Commando Regiment you will deploy to Norway to learn and practice the skills of Arctic survival and how to move and fight in this most inhospitable of terrain. You will be able to survive and fight in an environment where most men fight to survive.

Serving with 29 Commando Regiment requires volunteers who are fit, motivated, determined and resourceful. Young people who are able to work together as a ream but who are also reliable and confident individuals. Commando Training is demanding both mentally and physically. To earn the right to wear the green beret of the commando you will have to pass the All Arms Commando Course at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines, a course which takes men to their limits. However prior to overcoming this hurdle the Regiment will invest a substantial amount of time and resources in order to prepare you for the rigours of the Commando Course. You will become fitter than you ever thought possible, master a wide range of combat skills and learn to maintain your body and equipment so that despite being wet, tired and hungry you can summon the energy and motivation to carry on.

The All Arms Commando Course

The majority of this eight week course will be spent learning and practicing new skills. The course culminates in a final exercise that puts all these new found skills into practice in a fast moving, action packed series of events. The final week of the course is spent overcoming the final frontier, the Commando test which you must pass to earn the green beret. These include, the 9 mile speed march, the Tarzan assault Course, the Endurance Course, the 30 mile march and the 12 mile load carry.

On completion of these you will have earned the right to wear the coveted green beret.
