The Cheshire Regiment Association

Full membership of the Association is restricted to any individual of any rank who is serving, or has served, in the Regiment or any of its Regular, Militia, Service or Special Battalions or in any unit duly authorised and recognised by the Regimental Council as belonging to or forming any part of the Regiment.

STATUS

The main objectives of the Association are:

(a)        To promote in every way possible the efficiency of The 22nd Cheshire Regiment and to maintain and preserve its traditions.

(b)        To keep alive the spirit of the Regiment and to maintain friendships and comradeship between past and present members of the Regiment.

(c)        To relieve serving and retired members of the Regiment or the Association and their dependants who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress.

The Association is run by a Management Committee which is chaired by the Chairman of the Association who is a retired officer of the Regiment invited to fill the post by the President.  The Assistant Regimental Secretary, also a retired officer, is the permanent Secretary of the Association.  There are eight other members of the Management Committee made up of Ex Officio the Second in Command and RSM 1st Bn and Officer and a WO from KCR and 4 elected members of the Association.

Most of the 1st Bn members subscribe one days pay a year to the Association which is deducted from their pay in four quarterly amounts.  These subscriptions are covenanted so the Association is able to recover the tax.  This has been the main source of income to the Association since the early 1960s.

Over the years the Trustees have invested funds as they have become available, with the result that income from those investments now represents a fairly large percentage of the Association’s income.  Apart from the occasional donation these are the only sources of income.  It is therefore one of our main aims to invest as much money as possible to ensure a healthy account in the future for the benefit of those who contribute so much now.  The healthy state of the Association’s finances is, without question, due almost solely to the contribution made by the regular serving members since the introduction of the Days Pay Scheme.  The Association is most grateful for the support it has received from them over the past years and continues to receive from them.

The Association awards benevolent grants as it considers necessary to those eligible under sub para (c) of the main objects.  In the year ending 31 March 2003, the Association awarded £26,300 to 76 people, mostly past and present of the Regiment or their dependants.  The Association also disbursed £18,800 for the Army Benevolent fund over the same period.

Each branch runs its own affairs.  All have periodic meetings and most hold Socials and Dinner Dances etc, the frequency of which is basically related to the strength of the Branch.  Most too carry out benevolence work within their own areas and this, for the most part, is self financed.

Generally speaking, the Association is in a very healthy state and this is reflected in the popularity of the annual reunions.

Any Cheshire who would like to become a member and would like to join one of the branches should contact the Secretary of the Branch nearest to them, for details of their meetings (usually held once per month) and other relevant information, or contact Captain Alan Hughes at RHQ.

The Association is a Registered Charity No. 1036982.

The Cheshire Regiment Club is attached to RHQ and is run by a management committee and is available for booking for branches and selected outsiders.  The club manager is Major R H Mc C Shaw and is contactable through RHQ 01244 313907.
