The Army is keen to promote fitness in every aspect of training. Adventurous training combines aspects of fitness and sports which are not the usual competitive team sports but rather allow individuals to challenge themselves in different environments. In certain circumstances it is the first time that individuals will have tried their hand at this type of training. The variety is almost boundless, from rock-climbing to sailing, mountaineering to jet-ski ing. In the Territorial Army there is ample opportunity to try out the many varied types of adventurous training available. One of the more leisurely and easily accessible sports now becoming increasingly popular is mountain biking. As with every activity safety is paramount with risk assessment carried out to comply with Health & Safety Law and at the same time ensure that those taking part are aware of the nature of hazards which may be faced. Adventure training week ends are ran at Unit and Squadron level. In Scotland there are many opportunities for hill-walking, canoeing, kayaking, cycling and rock climbing.
Members of 205 Field Hospital (Volunteers) Glasgow Squadron sailed over to the island of Arran for an adventurous training week end of cycling. Support on the day was tasked to two Squadron members who provided much appreciated water and food stops along the way. Fifteen members of the Squadron covered the 50+ miles around the island over two days in early August. The event was such a success that it looks like it may be an annual event. It is planned to incorporate a climb up Goat Fell on the island next year.
