16 Air Assault Brigade

Welcome by Commander 16 Air Assault Brigade
Brigadier Ed Butler (late Royal Green Jackets) DSO MBE

16 Air Assault Brigade is the newest and largest Brigade in the British Army. It has also been the busiest over the last few years with major deployments to Macedonia, where we disarmed the Albanian rebels and implemented the Ohrid Agreement, and to Afghanistan where we were the first Brigade into Kabul to set up the International Security and Assistance Force and of course to Iraq. We have also had numerous deployments to Northern Ireland and many smaller deployments to Africa and the Balkans. The new Apache Attack Helicopters have been integrated into the Brigade with 9 Regiment Army Air Corps, with 3 Regiment undergoing conversion to role.  The Apache is be the most potent addition to the Army’s inventory and one which will forge 16 Air Assault Brigade Brigade ahead of it's contemporary and future adversaries.

What makes 16 Brigade special is not only that it is the Army’s primary rapid reaction formation but that we are equipped and manned so that we can be used in any eventuality whether in evacuation operations and humanitarian tasks through to warfighting should that ever be necessary in the future. Our combination of air assault infantry, parachute troops and helicopters makes us one of the most flexible and usable formations in any modern Army in the world. We are now firmly established in our new home in East Anglia and major plans to redevelop our home in Colchester are now firming up. 16 Air Assault Brigade is the most exciting formation in the Army and we are at the cutting edge of the military.
