| 102 Battalion is unique in that it has the only Pipe Band in the Corps of Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME); in fact the Band is some 40 years older than the Corps.
The Band originated in 1902 when a Corps of Pipes and Drums was formed in the Tyne Division Submarine Miners based at Clifford's Fort in South Shields. During the Great War the Tyne Division was renamed Tyne Electrical Engineers (TEE) and in 1957 they became known as the 'Tynes'.
Over the years volunteer forces have frequently changed title and formation, and the Band had to survive many periods of uncertainty. In 1999 the Band was part of 72 (TEE) Engineer Regiment RE (V) when they too had to disband as part of the Strategic Defence Review. One Squadron was subsequently saved and become 72 (TEE) Field Squadron based at Debdon Gardens in Newcastle. The Squadron was however, too small to sustain a Band so on 1st July 1999 the Band transferred to 102 Battalion REME. The transfer was a logical one as, 102 Battalion also has a "Tynes" heritage dating from 1947 when REME first served with Tynes' units.
The Band is currently 22 strong, and is based at the TA Centre, Rhodes Street, Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne. It carries out some 80 engagements a year with different levels of involvement; these include formal dinners, concerts, gala days and parades. In addition to local and UK wide engagements the Band has performed throughout Europe including Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Poland, Romania and Spain. Wherever it plays the Band receives excellent reviews, and is frequently booked for repeat performances.
The Band is always on the lookout for new members, experienced and beginners. For more information call the Pipe President, Major (Eric) Ingram on 01325 307220, 0191 2132274 or 07931 743417. |
