Addis Ababa, 5 November 2010: The First Conference of States Parties to the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Pelindaba) took place at the AU Headquarters, in Addis Ababa, on 4 November 2010. The Conference was held in accordance with Article 12 and 14 of the Pelindaba Treaty. In particular, Article 14 stipulates that a Conference of all Parties to the Treaty shall be convened by the Depositary (the AU Commission) as soon as possible after the entry into force of the Treaty to, inter alia, elect the members of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (ACNE) and determine its headquarters. The Conference was attended by AU Member States Parties to the Treaty and other AU Members as observers, as well as by international partners. The Chairperson of the African
Union (AU)
Commission, Dr. Jean Ping, has reiterated the importance of the
profound, historical ties of cooperation between Africa and the Arab
World. Addressing delegates at the Opening Session of the Joint Meeting
of African and Arab Ministers of Foreign Affairs, on 08 October 2010 in
Sirte, Libya, Dr. Ping stated that Africa Arab cooperation was the
first and oldest cooperation arrangement entered into by Africa with
its external partners. He noted that the peoples of Africa and the Arab
World are highly interrelated neighbours who co-habit the same
continent, share the same past and work towards a common destiny,
characterised by a high degree of complementarity and interdependence. PRESS

STRONGLY CONDEMNS CONTINUED TERRORIST ATTACKS AGAINST AMISOM
Addis Ababa, 1st September 2010 - The Chairperson of the Commission of
the African Union, Jean Ping, received with sadness and regret, the
news of the killing of 4 Ugandan peacekeepers serving the AU Mission in
Somalia (AMISOM). These peacekeepers died as a result of a mortar
attack launched against their positions by the Al Shabaab, the same
group which carried out last week’s terrorist attacks that
resulted in the deaths of members of the Transitional Federal
Parliament (TFP). This latest attack also caused serious injuries to 17
other AMISOM peacekeepers. Press Release
